Website Design

I think that in the early life of a website it pays to keep the design relatively simple. Remember that not everyone has a high speed internet connection and a super computer, so it is better to be able to allow access to the widest range of visitors. If you have a lot of animation and sounds it can mean the site takes a long time to load and many people will click away rather than wait. Better to keep the home page, at least, on the small side, so that the page will load quickly to get your message across immediately.

Search engines do not always fully index pages that include frames, so it might be better to avoid them. Anything you can do to make your pages easier to navigate will not be wasted, both from the visitor's point of view and the search engine's robots. Make sure you don't make your images too large and be sure to give them an alternative text attribute.

There are several easy to use webpage design software applications, but if you use all the bells and whistles they offer, you may find that some browsers do not recognise the resulting pages. It is not necessary to know HTML these days, but a working knowledge of it can often be helpful. Don't include special effects just because you can. Ask yourself it they really enhance the visitor's browsing experience, or just slow the page down?

There is an excellent tool for checking your page design and content at Summitmedia.co.uk, but there is no need for every page on your site to rank highly. An superb publication is Aaron Wall's SEO Book which tells you all you need to know about search engine optimisation. If you need a webhost with a simple online page creation service, try 123-reg.  More tips on Web Design.

You may even find that eBay can help with your website design. There are often printed publications and eBooks that can help speed the design process.
