Domain Names

A good name for your domain is essential. It should, if possible, contain some of the keywords associated with your site, or maybe the actual title of the site. Most of the shorter domain names have now gone, but you should be able to choose one that adequately describes your site in a memorable fashion. I always try not to include any punctuation as this make it more difficult for a visitor to remember.

It is very important to have a top level domain name (TLD) such as a .com or .co.uk. This is for two reasons. One is that it is again easier for a visitor to remember and secondly the search engines are more likely to index your site. Don't be tempted to use a service provider's address like www.weserveyou.mywebsite.co.uk just to get the free hosting. Far better to have www.mywebsite.co.uk. Avoid using brand names which are not your property, as large companies can afford expert legal advice and you could be accused of passing off. Give careful thought to your choice of name as you will hopefully be using it for a long time.

It need not be expensive to register your chosen domain name name as there are many providers who offer this service at very cheap prices. Shop around for the best deal and you may find offers that give hosting as well. Be careful who you choose though, because some providers will charge you more at renewal time, or if you want to transfer the domain to a different provider at a later date. An excellent company to register domain names with is 123-reg.
