Website Meta Tags & KeywordsMeta tags are important for your web pages as they provide additional information, not visible to normal visitors, that the search engines utilise to decide listing parameters. Probably the most important tag is the 'title' which most browsers use to indicate the name of the page being viewed. This is not the same thing as the filename and must be created separately in most webpage creation software.
The next very important tag is the 'description' which is often used by search engines to précis the content of a page. Make sure you briefly describe the features present in the text on the page. One sentence is enough, but try to make it as relevant as possible. This is your opportunity to inform visitors about what your site is about, so don't waste it. 'Keywords' are less important than they used to be in search engine positioning, but it is still worth including them. Choose the keywords that are important to the content of the page. Don't have too many, but it is good to have twenty or so carefully chosen ones. If some of your keywords have popular misspellings, it does little harm to include them too, as some visitor's spelling is not as perfect as we might hope. There is a useful tool at Summitmedia.co.uk which will tell you how search engine friendly your site is, as well as analysing your meta tags and content. Here's more information on the importance of meta tags.
